The 4th generation Suzuki Jimny launched in 2018 in a standard 3-door body for this model, but in 2020 it was revealed that a 5-door version was in the works, and photos of the prototype surfaced on the Internet at the same time, but the official premiere took place only today. The 5-door Jimny’s main market should be India, where it will compete with the Force Gurkha and Mahindra Thar frame SUVs.
It should be noted that the fourth-generation 3-door Jimny will not be officially introduced in India, and the 5-door version will serve as the ideological successor to the Gypsy SUV, which Maruti Suzuki produced until 2017. Gypsy is a pickup truck built on the previous generation’s extended Jimny frame. The Gypsy’s body is not separated from the cab and is equipped with passenger seats; various kung variants were offered to protect passengers from inclement weather.
The 5-door Jimny did not surprise in terms of technology and design: the wheelbase increased from 2250 to 2590 mm, the overall length increased from 3645 to 3985 mm, but the width and height did not change – 1720 and 1645 mm, respectively. The elongated frame has an additional central cross member to reinforce it, but the suspension geometry with continuous axles has not changed. The ground clearance is 210 mm, the approach angle is 36 degrees, the departure angle is 50 degrees, and the ramp angle is 24 degrees.
The second row of the cabin has more legroom, but due to the narrow body, it is still only for two people. The trunk has also grown in size, now holding 208 litres (with the backs of the second row folded down – 332 liters). Six airbags, ESP, hill-climbing assistance, air conditioning, a rear-view camera, a multimedia system with wireless support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a four-speaker audio system are standard features.
The engine is a 1.5-liter gasoline “aspirated” K15B with a starter-generator, producing 105 hp at 6000 rpm and 134 Nm at 4000 rpm. 5-speed “mechanic” or 4-speed “automatic” transmission. Part-time four-wheel drive with a hard-wired front axle and a reduction gear in the transfer case. There are no cross-axle differential locks, but the brakes function similarly. By the way, the rear brakes are drums, while the front ones are ventilated discs. 195/80 R15 is the standard tyre size. Fuel tank capacity is 40 litres. Depending on the equipment, the curb weight ranges from 1195 to 1210 kg.
