Hello guys, and welcome back to Car Obsession. The Renault 5, it’s back! only this time it’s an EV and of course it’s much more cutting edge compared to the version offered in the 70s and 80s.

The new Renault 5 E-Tech has a choice of two batteries; a 40kWh version, which offers 120hp or a 52kWh version (as seen in this video), which offers 150hp along with 245Nm. O-62 comes in around 8 seconds and the top speed, if you’re really interested, is 93mph.

In regard to range, the 40kWh offers a range up to 186 miles, whereas the 52kWh battery offers an increased 248 miles. When it comes to charging, if you use an 11 kW AC charging point you’ll get the 52kWh battery from 10% to 100% in 4.5 hours, and it will take 3.5 hours to get the same result with the 40kWh battery.

If you use a 100Kw DC charger you’ll get the 52KwH battery from 15% to 80% in 30 minutes and for the 40KwH battery you’ll get the same result using an 80Kw DC charger. To help you monitor the charge there is a funky indicator on the bonnet.

The Renault 5 E-Tech starts from £22,995 if you go for the 40kwh battery and £26,995 if you for the 52kwh battery.

The base model is called Evolution and offers standard features such as LED headlights and daytime running lights, 18” alloys, 10.1” touchscreen, wireless smartphone connectivity, dual zone climate control, and rear parking sensors. There are also safety features including autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, driver attention alert, and e-call to name a few.

The Techno trim level costs £2,000 more, adding features such as tinted rear windows, LED indicators, body coloured roof, bonnet charge indicator, 10.3” driver’s digital displate, Reno avatar, curtain airbags, reversing camera, denim interior, synthetic leather steering wheel, automatic high beam.

The Iconic Five is another further £2,000 more, adding differnet style to the 18” alloys, electrically folding door mirrors, rear cross traffic alert, active driver assist, blind spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, handsfree parking, heated front seats, heated steering wheel and even more safety equipment

At the time of filming there is a special Roland Garros edition, which starts at £29,995 and is only available with the larger battery. This trim level offers different 18” alloys once more, matte shadow grey paint, clay coloured wireless phone charger, special light grey upholstery and Roland Garros
detailing to both the inside and out.

Even though this is a pretty small car, the boot is generous, measuring at 326 litres, more than the now retired Ford Fiesta. Rear space is not impressive, though and unless you’re putting a child or a smaller adult, I think there may be some complaints. This is especially true if you 6 foot 2 like me.
